I’ve discovered that I get a ridiculous amount done when I am waiting.
You know when you’re anxiously awaiting something, and you get teenage girl syndrome?
Yeah, I do too.
I had my first staged reading Monday night and it was pretty fabulous and all day I had teenage girl syndrome. I couldn’t sit still. The butterflies were flapping so hard in my chest that I was sure I was going to float away.
My short story was published in a local anthology, and I got to hang out with a roomful of amazing and fantastic writers as we took turns taking to the stage and sharing our work.
I had my friend do my hair and make-up for the occasion, because why not? Honestly it was one of the best things I could have done. I went in looking and feeling fantastic, and it gave me a much needed boost of confidence to read in front of 200 strangers.
Oh and by the way, once we got there, we discovered that there was no microphone. Yup, I had to bust out my theatre voice, and I have to confess, until I opened my mouth to speak I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to project over a dull whisper. I was hoping the microphone was going to take care of that, but it was great and such a wonderful place to have my first reading.
All in all, it was a lovely experience, and I know I’ll be less nervous the next time around. Well, I’ll still probably be terrified, but I’m okay with that. I successfully spoke in public and didn’t spontaneously combust.
In other news, I’m taking a technical writing class and still going strong with my science fiction and fantasy class offered by the lovely and talented Cat Rambo.
Oh and in a super special plug, because she’s fabulous, if you live in the SoCal area and have an event you need to look fabulous for, please go to http://makeupbycatherine.com. She’s amazing, talented, fun, and made me look and feel like a million bucks.
